Willard is a wise man. Just needed to add that the sageo is never meant to be untied; and why the samurai on the hilt? Perfect for the budding ninja in your life.

I just got mine about an hour ago and for a $30 sword, it's very nice. The blade IS carbon steel; not stainless. It has a very nice leather tsuka ito, I personally LOVE the wrap style of the sageo. I can't really tell if it's a full/half tang or a rat tail tang, but I believe it may be full tang. My other swords blades are thicker than this one's. The rayskin and menuki(handle orniments) are plastic. It has no mekugi, but the plastic IS dimpled like it is filling in a hole, so it could be a half tang. It comes slightly sharp, but a little work with a sharpening stone and you should be able to but a nice edge on it. All in all, I really like this sword and would recommend it as a cutter or a nice hanger/ deco piece.
