Kratos was an ex-Spartan warrior and the Blades of Chaos are his primary weapons in both God of War and the Chains of Olympus video games. When Kratos pledged his service to Ares, the god of war, Ares armed him by attaching these blades to his arms with long chains wrapped and seared into his forearms, giving Kratos the ability to swing them at long distances and eradicate his foes. They become engulfed in flames when used, but are extinguished when attached to Kratos' back. Kratos loses these blades in his final fight with Ares, where they are brutally ripped from his arms, along with Kratos' other powers. When Kratos at last defeats Ares, Athena bestows upon him the Blades of Athena, which bear a similar resemblance to his original blades.
