The Hanwei Practical Katanas have always been at the forefront of providing economical yet functional swords to the martial arts community. Designed for maximum cutting power in heavy targets, the practical xl katana combines the blade geometries and profiles of the Performance Series with the affordability of Practical fittings. The blades in the cutting styles are forged from 1566 steel and differentially hardened in the traditional manner, producing an edge hardness of HRC60 and spine hardness of HRC40. The removeable handle is tightly wrapped in the tradtional style with imitation leather to provide a positive grip that will withstand years of tameshigiri practice.

Jasons video review of the XL is dead on, pretty basic. Then you get to the blade and its really amazing. This is my 4th katana from SOM and I will not buy from anyone else. SOM service is 5 star!

All I can say is this is one hefty,tight,beautiful piece of steel! I can't wait to cut with it. I study kenjutsu and after practicing with this it makes my other swords seem like toothpicks. It's not beautiful or graceful but it is what it is.

Super sharp!!!!!!!! Pool noodles, milk jugs, beach mats beware. All will fall under this blade!!!!!!!! This is my first hanwei.....and wont be my last!!!!
