SH2312 -- Yari (Rattan Wrap)
Partner Exclusive

The Yari was an essential battlefield weapon of the Samurai and took great skill to use and maneuver due to its length and size. We now have two Yari designs by Paul Chen, both based on originals dating to feudal Japan. Both blades are forged in T-10 high-carbon steel and are triangulated and double-edged with a deep fuller on the flat side of the blade. Differential tempering results in a clear hamon on each edge. The tangs are long to absorb the shock of a blow and the one-piece staff construction reinforces the durability of the spear.

Both of these Hanwei yari are modeled after the su-yari or “straight-spear” design. The shafts (ebu) are finished in a deep black lacquer and have a flattened side at the bottom section for blade orientation. The fittings (koshirae) follow distinctive traditional designs. The popular SH2152 Yari features a long (16-3/4”) blade while that of the new SH2312 is more compact at 11” long, making for a faster weapon. The SH2312 Yari also features a rattan wrapped section at the upper grip, making this a visually stunning piece. Both Yaris are provided with black lacquered sheaths (saya).

Very good.

There are not many choices available for yari. There are multiple different designs for yari, such as jumonji and the su-yari this is based off of. But when you try to buy a high-quality, well made yari, you're very well limited to either custom made or Hanwei/Paul Chen. Custom made ones will easily cost in the thousands of dollars, so if you are in fact a practitioner of the martial arts who wants to improve their training, this is all you truly have. But it is not a bad product, at all. Anything sub-100 is going to be very low in quality, and this, even though it has a larger price tag, is still not as high quality as can be produced. First, there is a bag to place over the yari's blade and saya, but none for the yari's pole, which is unlike the Hanwei naginata. Second, it is much shorter than I imaged it would be, but is still quite acceptable. Using the yari for bo kata, it is very well weighted. It also feels as if it would be weighted well for throwing, but I wouldn't recommend such a thing. The rattan wrap is not only beautiful, but it adds friction to an area where the hand needs to be steady. While the naginata is a black matte finish for its pole, giving it mroe friction, the yari's pole under the rattan is lacquered. I am certain it's with Kashu and not Urushi lacquer. The lacquered finish allows for it to move very smoothly when switching hand positions in kata, while the rattan keeps the front hand steady for thrusts and cuts. I do not own the other yari of similar design, but I find the smaller blade with the shallow bo-hi to be very nice; it's long enough as it is. The blade is forged with either a notare or gunome hamon (I am not looking at it ATM), and nakago (with mei) with two meguki-ana. The fittings are beautiful and firm. The only problem I had was how hideously dirty the saya was. It still is...
