The Praetorian Roman Gladius: The Valiant Armoury "Praetorian" is named in honor of the Praetorian guard that was created in 27 BC by the Roman Emperor Augustus. It is a Mainz style Roman Gladius sword. This type first appeared shortly after Mainz was founded as the Roman permanent camp of Moguntiacum in 13 BC by the Roman general Drusus. The swords made at Mainz were generally sold to the people of the lands to the north of Mainz. They are characterized by a slight waist running the length of the blade and a long point. The Praetorian features a sharp, hand hammer forged 19 and 3/4 inch leaf shape blade. The handle is alternating brass and macassar ebony hardwood. (Scabbard Included)

I have loved this blade since I first opened the box. Wonderful construction. the scabbard while of good leather scratched the blade. You must smooth the channel right away.

This sword is the most historically accurate you can find in this price range. There are others but they are much more expensive. The blade is the correct shape for a Mainz pattern blade and the grip is very comfortable. The scabbard is leather and not historically correct (at least from what has been found thus far) but it is very pleasing to the eye and takes the same shape as the blade. The blade fits snugly into the scabbard. I like this sword a lot and it is also a good cutter and thruster. The Praetorian has also been favorably reviewed on SBG. A great representation of a Roman gladius and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes ancient Roman weapons!
