A falchion (from Old French fauchon, ultimately from Latin falx "sickle") is a one-handed, single-edged sword of European origin, whose design is reminiscent of the Persian scimitar and the Chinese dao. The weapon combined the weight and power of an axe with the versatility of a sword. Falchions are found in different forms from around the 11th century up to and including the sixteenth century. In some versions the falchion looks rather like the scramasax and later the sabre, and in some versions the form is irregular or  like a machete with a crossguard. While some propose that encounters with the Islamic shamshir inspired its creation, these "scimitars" of Persia were not developed until long after the falchion. More likely, it was developed from farmer's and butcher's knives or in the manner of the larger Messer. The shape concentrates more weight near the end, thus making it more effective for chopping strikes like an axe or cleaver.

A strong blade that will give a deadly blow on any target. A bit heavy (compared to historically accurate falchions, but... like I care!). The pommel is one thing to get used to. The good side about the pommel is that it forces you to learn the technic of handling a sword properly and being able to cut efficiently. The one thing that makes this sword lose a star, in my opinion, is that the edge, though sharp enough to cut milk jugs (haven't tried tatami), tend to reboud on dried bamboo or tree branches if not swung properly. Or is it just because I'm not used to straight blades yet? Anyway, the edge is still sharp enough and the blade heavy enough to make you split skulls (I didn't try it, but they DO call it a skull splitter on swords buyer's guide.com, lol). I didn't try it as much as the practical katana (paul chen) yet, so maybe I should... Anyway, it IS a strong blade, so go for it if you want durability, it will deliver the goods!
