Game of Thrones Season 8 is finally set to release! They haven’t committed to a specific date (unfortunately), but we’re optimistic. Our countdown timers are set to Sunday, April 7, 2019.
Season 8 has a budget of $90 million (for comparison, season 3 had a budget of $40 million), so strap in, grab the popcorn and get ready for some non-stop action!
Here are some of our favorite theories and predictions for season 8!
Clegane vs. Clegane
No question here… Season 8 will almost certainly feature these two literal giants square off in a head-to-head fight to the death. There will be some big weapons, some super-human feats of strength (one of them will almost certainly pick the other up at some point during the fight).
By the way, Sandor will win, but die before the end of the season.
Cersei will be Killed by the Hand of Jamie or Tyrion
Wouldn’t it be the ultimate surprise if Cersei somehow regained greatness for the Lannisters and won the battle for the Iron Throne? Well that would be terrible, but don’t worry, it won’t happen. Maggy the Frog prophesized that Cersei’s younger brother (could be Jamie or Tyrion) would kill her. All of Maggy’s other predictions have come true so far, so there’s good reason to suggest that this will come true as well.
Daenerys will become pregnant with Jon Snow’s child
Awkward… or at least it will be when Jon and Daenerys find out from Bran that they are Aunt/nephew.
Jon on a Dragon
There are 2 dragons left. Only 2 Targaryens left (even if they don’t know it yet). Surely it’s no coincidence that some camera time was dedicated to Jon’s intimate encounter with one of the dragons in season 7. Let’s also not forget that Rhaegal was named for Jon’s father (more foreshadowing).
It is likely that Jon and Daenerys’s attention will be split between King’s Landing and the Night King in the north. Jon will surely be the one to head north to face the Night King.
Dragon vs. Dragon
And following up from the last prediction, yes, we will have a dragon fight. And it will be epic. This will be the single best dragon-on-dragon action ever produced. It will most likely be near the end of the season.
You know it’s going to be good. The whole show basically built towards this, so sit back and enjoy it!
Arya will wear Petyr Baelish’s Face
Arya will surely continue to surprise us in the final season. There will be at least 1 or 2 dramatic “pulling off the mask” moments where the audience will gasp that it was actually Arya.
Petyr Baelish made some important connections across Westeros over the years – connections that could be very useful to the campaign. The only person in a position to exploit those connections is a mask-wearing Arya.
Bonus prediction: Arya dies at the hand of an ally because they didn’t recognize her.
Who will die?
Game of Thrones producers admit that there will be a lot of death in the final season. Surely some (likely many) fan favorites will meet their end, but worry not… we will finally get to see some of the show’s worst characters get what’s coming to them!
Here are some of the more notable names that we predict will not make it to the end of the finale of season 8.
Daenerys Targaryen. Only one of her and Jon Snow will survive we think it will be Jon (and maybe the baby).
Arya Stark. At the hand of an ally…and only after completing some very important acts of espionage and assassination.
Cersei Lannister. At the hand of either Jamie or Tyrion.
Jamie Lannister. Jamie kills himself after his love.
Sandor & Gregor Clegane. Sandor kills Gregor; and Sandor dies soon after.
Brienne of Tarth. After filling her promise to Catelyn her purpose is complete.
Beric Dondarrion Too many chances and they will finally run out.
Greyworm. He will fight, he will protect and he will give his life.
Euron Greyjoy. We think Theon’s rescue of Yara will ultimately result in Euron’s death, but not necessarily at the hands of Theon himself.
Yara Greyjoy. Yara will die in the rescue attempt, possibly giving her life for Theon.
Melisandre. The red woman’s bag of tricks isn’t quite empty. She will have more impact in the final season, but she will also meet her end.
Jorah Mormont. Jorah’s sad story will have a sad ending. He will live to see Daenerys again, but will not be able to save her.
Notice that the Night King isn’t on our list? The battle will be won and the Night King’s forces will be pushed back, but we don’t think that we will 100% know that the Night King is dead at the end of the season.
The producers of the show have already started developing 3-5 concepts for sequels / prequels to the series. The Night King living would certainly feed the need for sequels. We don’t think it’s the end just yet.
